For Sale in Japan: Electronics Assets

TOKYO—Panasonic Corp. 6752.TO -1.38% said Friday it agreed to sell the digital-camera business it inherited in its 2009 acquisition of Sanyo Electric Co. to a Japanese private-equity firm. The deal is symbolic of how Japan's struggling consumer-electronics companies are setting aside years of resistance to get serious about shedding nonessential assets and streamlining their sprawl of operations.

But this newfound pragmatism, necessitated by a sobering reality of multibillion-dollar losses in recent years and strained finances, may be hindered by a mismatch of what they are willing to sell and what potential buyers want.

For these companies—Sony Corp., 6758.TO -1.63% Panasonic and Sharp Corp. 6753.TO -2.32% —it is a Catch-22 situation. The businesses that make the most sense to unload are uncompetitive, turning off potential buyers. But while selling businesses with more promising technology may draw in a bigger pool of potential buyers—both from the industry and private equity—that may leave the cupboard bare for a future turnaround.

Risky as that might be, some observers say some of the biggest names in Japan's corporate ranks may face no other choice.

"Company management should take a step back and calmly assess the possibility of various strategic alternatives of the business when it is still strong enough to compete globally and when it has a good momentum to generate profit, rather than waiting for five or 10 years until the business starts to underperform," said Masao Yoshikawa, head of the merger-and-acquisition group at Citigroup Inc. C -1.69% in Tokyo, which recently advised struggling Olympus Corp.'s 7733.TO -0.65% tie-up with Sony.

Potential deals involve businesses in highly competitive segments that would benefit from a shift to a low-cost manufacturing base, according to industry executives and investment bankers. The most-often cited examples are Sony's rechargeable-battery business and the television operations that Panasonic carried over from Sanyo. Facing a direr financial situation, Sharp is expected to sell a U.S.-based solar-project-development company that it bought two years ago.

Panasonic agreed Friday to sell the Sanyo camera business—which manufactures digital still and video cameras for other company brands—because a separate Panasonic unit already sells competing products under its own brand. The sale to Advantage Partners LLP is expected to close on March 31. The sale terms weren't disclosed.

"It's no longer considered taboo to sell," said Yuichiro Wakatsuki, head of mergers and acquisitions at Bank of America BAC -2.00% Merrill Lynch in Tokyo, adding that, in a recent change, Japanese companies are now more open to his pitches on what assets they can sell, not just what they can buy.

There are other low-margin businesses that the companies may want to unload, but which may generate little interest. Bankers and executives say logical options would be Sony's Vaio personal-computer business, Panasonic's mobile-handset unit and some of its electronics-components operations, and parts of Sharp's household-appliances division.

Another impediment may be the strong yen that has tormented the export-dependent trio in recent years by making it more expensive to sell goods manufactured in Japan. But it also makes it more expensive for non-Japanese companies to make acquisitions in Japan.

Some of Japan's sprawling electronics conglomerates with a more industrial focus—Hitachi Ltd., 6501.TO -1.43% Fujitsu Ltd., 6702.TO -0.58% NEC Corp. 6701.TO -0.60% and Toshiba Corp. 6502.TO -1.29% —to date have been more active than the consumer-oriented companies in shedding assets, having started a series of realignments about a decade ago. But rather than outright sales, they have done that through the creation of a complicated web of joint ventures, often backed by some government funding. The effect was to reduce their exposure to struggling industries, such as cellphones or specialty semiconductors, but didn't actually provide the parent companies a clean exit from those sectors.

Sony, Panasonic and Sharp may have to look abroad or to private-equity firms to unload businesses, because many Japanese companies simply don't have the money to step in and bail each other out. Taiwan contract manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. 2317.TW -0.34% already has snapped up assets from Japanese electronics companies, including a stake in Sharp's domestic liquid-crystal-display plant and Sony's overseas TV-assembly factories. Private-equity firms have eyed assets from Japanese electronics companies for years.

Sony is looking at options with its rechargeable-battery business, according to people familiar with the company's thinking. The division makes batteries for laptop computers, smartphones and other mobile devices, but it is a competitive market with Asian rivals driving down prices. While the company hasn't reached a final decision, some Sony executives believe that selling the business to a low-cost Asian manufacturer makes the most sense.

For now, Sony isn't considering more drastic measures such as selling its financial or entertainment businesses, according to these people. Both businesses are profitable and would garner more interest than Sony's Vaio computer business—a division with thin margins in the best of times and that is unprofitable during tough times. Sony doesn't break out earnings for the PC business. Since April, the company has been saying that it will accelerate realigning its business portfolio and shifting its resources to growth areas, but hasn't yet publicly identified any sale targets as part of that effort.

Panasonic President Kazuhiro Tsuga outlined a new round of restructuring measures at the end of October, when the company reported a ¥685 billion ($8.12 billion) quarterly loss. Starting in April, the company will streamline its sprawling 88 business units to 56 units, with only subsidiaries capable of a 5% operating margin making the cut. While some may be closed or consolidated, Mr. Tsuga said the company is also considering selling some of the 32 units on the chopping block.

The troubles Panasonic faces today reflect in part its failure to fully reap the benefits from its 2009 acquisition of Sanyo. Panasonic hadn't integrated Sanyo's digital-camera operations and the overseas Sanyo-brand TV business. A spokeswoman for Panasonic said the company is now studying various options regarding what to do with the TV business. Last year, the company sold Sanyo's household-appliance businesses to the Haier Group.

Cash-strapped Sharp is also considering selling a string of assets including plants in Mexico, China and Malaysia, and Recurrent Energy, a California-based solar-power developer it bought for $305 million in 2010, according to people with knowledge of the company's plans. Sharp has also said it may sell its holdings in other companies and its Tokyo office. Hon Hai is considering buying Sharp's TV factories in Japan or abroad. Around the same time it took a stake in Sharp's LCD plant in March, the Taiwan company agreed to take a stake in Sharp. But the agreement unraveled amid a sharp decline in Sharp shares after dismal earnings. Both companies said they are still talking.

Fanless Embedded System with Multi-Channel NTSC/PAL D1 Video Capture Support

Believing what we want to believe

Human beings, thanks to culture and genetics, are inclined to be pessimistic, fearful, skeptical and believers in conspiracy theories. We also don't like change.

The marketer (products, government, religion, whatever) that decides to trade in any of these glitches has a tremendous advantage. It's far easier to create fear than to soothe it, far easier to argue for a conspiracy than to prove that one doesn't exist.

When we find ourselves rewarding our instincts instead of reality, we often make poor choices. Of course, sometimes there's a good reason to be afraid or to imagine that a secret conspiracy is at work. Not often, though.

When confronted by a mass of facts and nothing but instinct or tribal confirmation on the other side, it might be worth revisiting why we choose to believe what we believe.

Govt asked to encourage manufacturing sector

ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday asked the government to focus on development of manufacturing sector to ensure development. Manufacturing, one of the most vital parts of the economy, is a major source of jobs, contributor to a significant portion of taxes, driver for innovation and tool to meet many national challenges, it said.
Lack of supportive policies shrinks manufacturing sector leaving country with a wide trade deficit as imports outstrips exports, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.
He said that rising poverty and falling exports can be tackled by paying due attention to the overtaxed and declining industrial sector which has been ignored since long leading to economic weakness. The influence, importance and share of sectors of the economy which are not as beneficial for the economy as manufacturing has been increasing which may be good for the few but it has little positive impact, he said.
Reforming the tax regime relieving manufacturing sector of the undue burden, protecting local industry from unfair competition, baring under-invoicing and introducing the proper taxation for real estate business can improve the situation.
He said that discouraging speculative trading and encourage genuine investors can also divert some funds to the manufacturing sector which are presently consumed by import trade, real estate and the stock market.
According to World Bank’s data the manufacturing percentage of GDP stands at 37 per cent in Belarus, 25 pc in Dominican Republic, 59 pc in Guatemala, and 59 per cent in Serbia.
Pakistan’s output is claimed to be 24 per cent of the GDP with textile production and apparel manufacturing largest contributors accounting for about 66 per cent of the exports and almost 40 per cent of the employed labour force which merits attention, he said. We can only meet most of the future challenges and brace for competition with other countries if we have a solid manufacturing base.

New iMac 2012 review round-up: what the critics say

Apple's 2012 iMac models began shipping on Friday, and some have landed in the hands of experts who have put the all-in-one desktop computer to the test. Here's a round-up of what the critics had to say about the brand new iMac.

"It is incredibly slim a few years ago, this could have been mistaken for a standalone flat-panel display. But the new iMac is a powerful all-in-one that should meet the needs of all but the most demanding of users," writes Fortune's JP Mangalindan.

Fortune's review notes that the lack of an optical drive may mean that the new iMac isn't an ideal solution for some, but for those who download or stream music and video, it's a "non-issue".

Mangalindan claims to have put the new iMac through its paces, running multiple applications at ones and spending hours playing Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on it, with not an issue to speak of. He notes that the fan did fire up, but stayed quiet.

Fortune's review explains that the non-Retina display on the new iMac won't bother those who aren't used to a Retina MacBook Pro, and that the new screen with up to 75 per cent less glare seems to have made a big improvement.

Mangalindan's only gripe was the iMac's speakers, which are "nowhere near horrible," but lacking in bass. A separate pair of speakers is mandatory for audiophiles, he says.

"It is the biggest iMac product redesign in years and a largely successful one, provided some users don't mind shelling out a little extra for the optical drive or overlooking this generation's omission of Retina Display," Mangalindan concludes.

David Pierce at The Verge wrote: "This year's iMac appears to have undergone the computer version of elective cosmetic surgery - it doesn't look different, just better."

While he notes that "Apple's claim of it being 5mm thin is a bit misleading," due to the iMac's bulging back, Pierce said that it is "incredibly sleek" and "good looking".

Pierce says that he misses the optical drive in the iMac, and doesn't think it makes as much sense to remove it as it did on laptops. He also dislikes the repositioning of the SD card slot, which is now on the back of the iMac, alongside the headphone jack, four USB 3.0 ports, Thunderbolt port, and a Gigabit Ethernet port.

Pierce agrees with Mangalindan in that the iMac's speakers are poor. "I always loved the iMac's speakers but in the newer, slimmer model, they're actually a step backward.Mid and highs sound great, and the down-firing speakers are loud enough to fill a room, but there is absolutely zero bass response," he explains.

As for the display, Pierce writes that "if you get close to the screen, you can definitely see individual pixels, but at normal using-a-computer distances, they look crisp and sharp."

"Indeed the glare problems that beset so many displays are much less present here, though there's still some reflection and glare," he says. "The improved manufacturing also makes whatever's on the screen feel closer to you, almost like things are jumping out of the panel."

Pierce also notes that the iMac didn't show any sign of struggling when running multiple apps and games, and that the optional Fusion Drive, which will set you back an additional £200, "works just as it should, especially if you're coming from a hard drive-based machine," and feels "blisteringly fast."

Overall, Pierce's 2012 iMac review concludes: "The display is really the only unequivocated improvement in the new model, and it's a big one. The sleeker, slimmer design is great, but it causes a couple of problems and forces a few unfortunate compromises. Yes, it's faster, but only enough to keep up with the Joneses - equal performance can definitely be had elsewhere."

"There's no question this is the best iMac yet, but of course it is; Apple doesn't have a habit of making its good products worse. If you weren't in the market for a new all-in-one desktop, the iMac's not suddenly so much more appealing that you absolutely have to have one now, but if you're looking for a desktop PC there's still no better option."

TechCrunch's Darrell Etherington says that the new iMac's thinner design is impressive, but that all of that trimming has led to some omissions such as the built-in optical drive and, in the 21.5in model, user-accessible RAM. Despite this, Etherington says "this revamped iMac hardware is a huge improvement over previous generations in just about every way that matters."

Ethertington noted a "considerable" difference in the display's reflectiveness, and says that the screen feels "much improved in all tasks," especially photo editing.

Etherington's benchmark scores showed that the 2012 iMac has solid improvements over its predecessors, and his non-Fusion review unit "truly impressed in terms of executing every day tasks."

Interestingly, when it came to the speakers, Etherington disagreed with the previous two reviewers on the sound quality, describing the new iMac's built-in speakers as "better" than predecessors.

Engadget reviewer Dana Wollman found the new iMac's skinnier design 'eye-catching' but sees it as just a bonus, noting that the only time you'll ever notice it is when you're looking at your computer edge-on, which is something we don't do particularly often.

Wollman says that the iMac's wow factors are the display, sound and an impressive performance that means little waiting. She describes Apple's attempt to reduce glare on the display as a "success" and highlights the improvement in colour.

She agrees with Etherington in that the iMac's speakers are improved, and goes as far as saying "you probably don't need an external pair of speakers; as is, we felt we were rediscovering favourite songs, in that we were able to make out details that would have gotten drowned out on a lesser system."

"The newest iMac is a great product, and despite Apple's reputation for making pricey things, it's actually a great value, tooAs for FusionDrive, it's exceedingly rare to find a consumer system that uses an HDD for storage and an SSD for system stuff. That's a clear step up from typical hybrid drives, which use a much smaller amount of flash memory, mainly for caching and improving start-up times. And while Apple doesn't always win on specs, it makes a tempting offer here: you get beefier graphics than on competing systems, which should help creative professionals, amateur photographers and casual gamers alike," Wollman concludes, highlighting the lack of an optical drive as the only real drawback for some consumers.

CNET's Rich Brown gives the new iMac an 'excellent' rating, writing "Apple sticks to the fundamentals with the new iMac, relying on design, strong features, and overall polish to maintain its leadership among high-end all-in-ones."

Brown says that the 27in iMac is an easy recommendation for those who need or want a fast computer with a large, "gloriously crisp" display. "The new design simply looks fantastic," he says.

When it comes to Apple's new antireflective display, Brown writes that the benefits are "immediately apparent if you set the iMac up next to other large-screen monitors."

"On the whole, the 27in iMac seems fairly priced," Brown said. "The lack of an optical drive is inconsequential given how easy it is to add an external DVD burner. I also don't miss FireWire 800 on the iMac. Both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt are faster. I only wish Apple provided a dedicated HDMI input."

As for performance, Brown said: "This is the fastest iMac yet, and one of, if not the, fastest all-in-ones available."

Brown gave credit to the iMac's new, second microphone for its ability to improve sound quality of a FaceTime call.

In conclusion, Brown wrote: "You might be alarmed by the fact that the design is the most interesting thing about the new iMac. A thin bezel is nice to look at, but it doesn't improve processing speed, workflow, or overall utility. Fortunately for Apple, it evolved that design from a computer with a strong technical foundation. It is the updates to that foundation, and a few points of polish along the way, that keep this iMac on elite footing. I'll suggest you line up behind the Blu-ray fans to those of you hoping Apple will someday add touch-screen input to the iMac. Instead, this is a computer for serious, performance-driven users, particularly those who need a high-resolution display, and fast graphics and disk performance."

Overall, the majority of reviewers seem to agree that the lack of an optical drive in the new iMac models isn't a major issue. In a recent Macworld poll, 55 per cent of our readers said that they could live with out the CD/DVD drive on their Mac.

The reviewers also agreed that the display and performance of theTouch Panel PC iMac is much improved, and that the thinner design is one of the most impressive new features of the computer.

What they don't seem to agree on, however, is the quality of the speakers, with the reviewers completely torn over whether they are amazing or appalling.

We'll soon be bringing you our very own review of Apple's new iMac models, with our expert opinion on its pros and cons and our advice about whether or not you should buy one.

PC Mark 7/3D Mark 11

PC Mark 7/3D Mark 11

  PC Mark 7

Super PI/wPrime

Super PI/wPrime

  Super PI

Super PI

  wPrime

CineBench R11.5/Chess Benchmark

CineBench R11.5/Fritz Chess Benchmark

  Fritz Chess Benchmark

Fritz Chess Benchmark

Sandy Bridge-E

Defy MS' Wacky Omission by Adding a Start Button to Win 8

So you just got Windows 8 and you're missing the Start button? No problem, just add one -- for free.

If there's one user interface design choice that has caused the most hands-in-the- air bewilderment in the tech industry during 2012, it's got to be the omission of the Start button and Menu in Microsoft's Windows 8 computer operating system.

Microsoft's bizarre play to get millions of people to change they way they operate ubiquitous machinery has got to be up there along with changing road sides for traffic, as happens occasionally.

Notable occasions of that switch include left to right in Italy after fascist autocrat Mussolini assumed power, and in Burma more recently when superstitious president General Ne Win ordered the population to change road sides after discussions with a local wizard.

Well, if you've got past the crying, laughing and "What were they thinking?" stages of Microsoft's change, and are ready to take this strange matter into your own hands, there is a way out. Just add a Start button yourself through a third-party utility like Chromium- based Torch. Here's how.

Step 1

Click on the Internet Explorer tile on the Windows 8 Start page. Then browse to the Win8 StartButton Web page with Internet Explorer, and click on the green button labeled "Download Now Win8 StartButton." Choose "Run" when the dialog box opens.

Allow the download to take place and then choose "Yes" when the User Account dialog box opens and asks you if you want to let Win8 StartButton make changes to the PC.

Step 2

Select the Custom Installation radio button and choose the first option, which will be the Windows Start Button and Start menu in a Windows 7 theme.

Tip: Ignore the remaining options like Touch browser and Media Player for now. Those options will install add-ons. Come back to them later if you'd like to reward Torch for its fine work.

Step 3

Select Finish after the install process completes, and your new Start button will pop into its familiar bottom-left corner on the Desktop.

Tip: The new Win8 StartButton doesn't appear on the Windows 8's Start page -- that's the page with all the tiles. The button lives on the Desktop page. Reach the Desktop page after a reboot by clicking on the Desktop tile on the initial Windows 8 Start page.

Step 4

Customize the button and menu settings by clicking on the new Start button and choosing Settings and then Classic Start Menu.

Select the All Settings radio button rather than the Basic Settings button. Then choose the Context Menu tab to change between Windows Classic, Windows XP and Windows 7 styles.

Choose Customize Start Menu and drag the items you'd like to see immediately when you press the Start button. Drag from Available Commands to Current Menu Items. Available Commands can include items like Programs & Features, or Printers.

Other settings include options for language, search box, menu look, sounds and general behavior.Touch Panel PC

Tip: Win8 StartButton also creates its own tile on the Windows 8 Start page that you can click on to launch the settings for the Classic Start Menu on the Desktop.

Step 5

Uninstall Win8 StartButton if it's not for you, and you've decided to embrace the Windows 8 user interface and its lack of Start button, after all.

Browse to the Windows Control Panel from the Start button and choose Program & Features. Double-click Classic Shell and choose the Uninstall option. Confirm that you require the program to be removed and allow the removal to complete.

Nokia Lumia 920: review

The Nokia Lumia 920 is not what you'd call understated. Its size and weight have been remarked on in other reviews, but for the record, it's 130.3mm x 70.8mm and weighs in at 185g, which, Google tells me, is the same as a gift box of Beech's Classic Mint Selection. (Or 19.4 £1 coins, using the Pocket-Lint measure; the iPhone 5 is 12 coins, Samsung Galaxy S3 at 133g is 14 coins exactly - Tech ed..)

I'm fine with that; in fact I quite like its heft in my hand, but then I carry it in my handbag. If you prefer to stash a phone in a pocket rather than a handbag or manbag, this could well be too big.
The choice of colours mostly isn't understated, either: the review handset was pillarbox red; other options are a sort of fluorescent custard yellow, or white or the more sober grey or black options.

Screen

Nokia Lumia 920 home screen. Windows Phone now allows quarter-size tiles (and half-size ones which run across the screen)

The screen is very good: at 4.5in and with a resolution of 768 x 1280, it's not quite in phablet territory, but feels big enough to choose the full version of websites rather than mobile ones. The colours are rich (a previous Windows phone I used, the HTC HD7, always felt a bit washed out), the blacks are deep and text is sharp. If anything, the colours can be a bit too saturated – choose your accent colour (used as the system-wide colouring) carefully.

Build and robustness

Nokia is keen to stress how sturdy this phone is: at the launch I went to, the Nokia people were enthusiastically talking about how it can withstand being dropped. Lumia 800 users thinking of upgrading will be very glad the flimsy flap that covered the mini-USB port in the Lumia 800 has gone, and the tray for the micro-sim is now properly secured; I dropped my Lumia 800 and neither the flap nor the carrier were ever the same again.

The downside of the monobloc body of course is that you can't replace the battery, and the smooth body, broken only by the three hardware buttons (which are standard on all Windows phones – Microsoft controls the design tightly) also means that there's no SD card slot. However, it's got 32GB of storage on board, and there's 7GB of Skydrive space thrown in.

Integration with Skydrive – Microsoft's cloud storage offering – is tight. You can save attachments or photos and documents you create on the phone direct to Skydrive, and as part of the setup process, the phone offers to save texts, settings and photos to the cloud.

Interface: switching costs

Windows Phone 8 'What's New' notification screen

I've been a Windows Phone user for a while, so I'm used to the interface, but for someone thinking of switching from another platform, the OS could be something of a learning curve. On the upside, it's the same on every WP handset – Microsoft doesn't allow the custom UIs that manufacturers use to differentiate their Android offerings.

Those who like to tweak how their phone looks won't be happy. You can change the colour of the tiles, and choose either a light or a dark background, and you can choose what you pin to the homescreen, and pick one of three sizes for tiles on the home screen. But that's it. There's no wallpaper in WP, nor themes nor mods.

Having said that, you can set up the home screen to be both personal and useful – you can pin any app and individual contact cards from the People hub to it. WP uses live tiles rather than icons – the flat design and the emphasis on information being displayed on those tiles is quite different to the home screen of any other platform where dumb icons are the order of the day. (Android's widgets come close.)

My home screen includes the Me tile, where I can see at a glance how many social media notifications I've got; my email live tile, which displays the number of unread emails (I know, that's more common across other platforms); live tiles for my most-used contacts, which tell me if there's any contact from any of them, as well as tiles for settings and the apps I use most – Google search (sorry, Microsoft); Addison Lee, Kindle, the People hub and the Photos hub.

People, get together

Friend's photo album in the People Hub on Windows Phone 8

The People hub is for me the compelling reason to use Windows Phone. Sign in to your accounts – the choices are an Exchange account, Hotmail, Nokia (does anyone actually have a Nokia account, though?), Nokia Mail, Yahoo Mail, Google, LinkedIn or indeed any other email provider offering POP3 or IMAP, and all your contacts will show up in the People hub. Spend a bit of time going through and linking any duplicates and you'll get one merged contact card for each.

You can filter the contacts list to show only contacts from chosen accounts – probably a good idea if you follow a lot of people on Twitter. However, they are more than just contact cards: from an individual's contact, you can call or text them, send an email, write on their Facebook wall, send them a tweet and see their latest social media post – and reply to that. However, sweep through to the next screen and you'll see their most recent online activity too: Facebook posts, posted photos, tweets and retweets; and again, you can interact with those right there without having to fire up the relevant app.

Windows Phone 8 shows your "history" with a contact on a single screen

Swipe along to the next screen in the People card, and if you're Facebook friends with them, you can see all their albums (subject to the permissions they've set, of course), and like, tag and comment on photos. There's no link to Twitter pictures, though. The final screen shows a recent history of your interactions with them – texts, calls and emails, but not social media. What this means is that you don't need to open dedicated apps for Facebook or Twitter very often – though you will have to if you want to see and reply to private messages, check out or admin brand pages, or indeed see your whole stream. The aggregated What's New screen in the contacts view of the People hub will collect updates from both Facebook and Twitter, but it's not a satisfactory way to keep up with a lot of people.

New: Rooms and Groups

Baked in to this version of Windows Phone is the ability to create Rooms and Groups. The separation between the two is a bit confusing, though. In Rooms, you invite participants – family, closest friends, whatever – and then you can share calendars, notes and chats privately between you. Only Windows Phone 7/8 users will get the full functionality though, and iPhone users can be members and use shared calendars, but you can't include them in group chat.

You don't need permission to add someone to a group: it's local to the handset. Groups are simply a way to filter updates from smaller numbers of people, and you can also send joint texts and IMs to them.

Kid's Corner: hands off

What is more useful is Kid's Corner: a space where you add content – games, apps, music and video – that you're happy for the anklebiters to use, while your stuff (emails, settings, NSFW content) remains out of reach of their sticky fingers. You have to introduce a lock on the home screen, and then Kid's Corner is a swipe right from there. In effect, it's almost another user account - one that's a subset of the main user's.

Camera and software

Given the rigid definition of the hardware – OEMs must stick to the design set out by Microsoft – manufacturers face a challenge differentiating Windows Phone handsets. Nokia does so with its camera hardware and software. Its PureView technology in effect stabilises the camera inside the phone by housing it in a cage with a gyroscope so that it moves to compensate for your wobbly hand. This means that you can get decent, non-wobbly, longer exposures, meaning it performs surprisingly well in low light: the pictures are also remarkably not too noisy.

The camera is an 8.7 megapixel device with a 16:9 BSI sensor that can also capture full HD video (1920 x 1080). The results are really quite good: this is the first phone I've used where I'd be happy to rely on it as my sole camera for an event rather than taking my DSLR along.

It's easy to use: the hardware button (under your right index finger when holding the phone in landscape mode) wakes the phone up and goes straight to the camera. I suggest turning the flash off: it's very harsh, and the phone handles low light well. Zooming is done by pinching the screen and you can share directly from the captured image to Facebook, Twitter, Skydrive, MMS or email.

Video is pretty straightforward, too, though bafflingly, there are no video-editing tools on the phone: you'll have to do any tweaking or cutting on a computer.

Where it gets fun is with the editing tools Nokia provides. Cinemagraph isn't, as you might expect, a video-editing app: what that does is create animated gifs from a series of pictures. This creates the effect of part of an image moving while the rest of the shot is static. However, you can't share those directly from the phone – you need to pluck it off the handset via a computer and send it on from there, which is a bit irritating if you're dedicated to social media.

More useful is Smart Shoot, which allows you to combine the best bits of a series of photographs so that your snaps of the family at Christmas won't be spoiled by Dad blinking: you can swap in his face from another image in the sequence. You can also remove unwanted objects from photographs, such as passers-by, or perhaps your ex.

There are rudimentary photo-editing tools on board with Creative Studio, and despite the mutterings about the understocked app store, plenty of third-party apps for you to add filters, effects etc to your snaps. And you can create panoramas with the Panorama app, or scan barcodes and QR codes straight from the camera screen using Bing Vision via the Lenses, which also launch Cinemagraph and Smart Shoot.

More than a camera lens: City Lens and Maps

Outside the house, your phone can become your virtual guide, with its excellent maps and navigation apps, and, if you don't mind looking a bit silly, the augmented reality app, Nokia City Lens, will if you switch on the camera overlay the image with information about local businesses, attractions, eateries and transport. Nokia Transport is also good: it uses your location to find the public transport options: perfect for finding your way home from an unfamiliar part of town.

Some of what's included is gimmicky. This phone can charge wirelessly if you treat yourself to either the wireless charging plate or one of the few (though doubtless there will be more) wireless charging accessories such as speakers I'm not convinced that isn't a bit of a waste of time: you can also charge it the old-fashioned way, via the micro-USB port, and goodness knows, most of us have several of those chargers hanging around the house and don't need another charging device. Especially not in the lurid colour choices.

NFC

NFC is part of the package – you can tap to exchange contact cards with someone with a similarly equipped phone. But, um, that's it for now, though there is the promise of more functionality in due course. NFC will also – eventually – drive contactless payments, though for now, the Wallet hub, which will drive those, is simply an area to store details such as your PayPal account, library card, and credit and debit cards. At present those can only be used for purchases via the Marketplace, and I'm not sure how comfortable I am about carrying around my card details on my phone. You set a PIN to access the Wallet, but it still feels a leap of trust I'm not ready to make.

For those who need a work phone, this comes with full-fat Office on board, and of course syncs seamlessly with an Exchange server, and also connects via an app to a Sharepoint server. However, there's no native remote desktop client, which is infuriating given that there was on previous versions of Windows Mobile (dumped in favour of Windows Phone more than two years ago), and the third-party options in the app store are either limited, lacklustre or a bit pricey.

As a phone

And finally, what's it like as a phone? It's a 4G handset, though I've been using it on 3G with my 3 sim, and it's been absolutely fine at holding on to the signal, even in my basement flat where other handsets have struggled. Battery life is indifferent: I found it would die towards late suppertime – so definitely charge it up overnight. I don't think it's any better or worse than my Lumia 800, which I'd rely on to last the day but if I were going out for a late night I'd give it a blast of juice before I go. I don't use voice much, though: I email, text etc. And I've turned off NFC, Bluetooth and background tasks; I suspect it would die faster with those on. If you start playing with it – messing about with pictures, or downloading apps from the store – you'll find the juice draining away quite quickly. I haven't had any problems with calls, though I have one tiny quibble with the onscreen keyboard, which is that the space bar is very small – smaller than on its predecessor, the Lumia 800 – which meant I often hit the comma key instead of the space bar.

It is, as remarked previously, a big handset, but I haven't found it too big, and I've got small hands. On the contrary, the spacious screen has been a boon to my middle-aged eyes: I have trouble focusing close up on small print single board computer   and images. And for the terminally middle-aged, you can toggle on a setting that means a double tap with two fingers will expand the text on the screen.

One piece of very good news is that you don't have to use an app to sync the phone to your Windows desktop: unlike the WP7.x devices, it shows up as a removable drive in Windows and you can simply drag and drop. If you want to sync, the Zune software has been replaced by the clunkily named Windows Phone App for desktop, which does the job adequately.

Conclusions

This is a very nice handset indeed. It feels like a high-quality device, and it feels like a sturdy device that will stand up to being lugged about in a handbag. There are some quibbles – some of the Nokia apps are fun but a bit, well, useless; the wireless charging is a bit of a gimmick; battery life could be better. And yes, the app store has significantly fewer apps than Google Play or the Apple App Store. Having said that, for me, there's nothing missing, although others will miss Instagram and taxi app Hailo.

One big WTF is the fact that it's only available in the UK on contract via Everything Everywhere, the 4G operator, or unlocked, which means this very nice phone probably won't get the user base and wider audience it deserves. But if you've got the money to spend, it's a very capable phone at the luxury end of the market.

Pros: lovely screen, 4G, sturdy, quality build

Cons: Not widely enough available, expensive, gimmicky in places. Some will think it too big.
