Investor wealth soars 27 per cent to over Rs 67 lakh crore in 2012

MUMBAI: Investor wealth soared by 27 per cent to around Rs 67.7 lakh crore in 2012 with the stock indices gaining nearly 25 per cent on hefty capital inflows and of late a slew of reform measures even as concerns remain over economic growth and rising fiscal deficit.

Indian bourses made a dramatic turnaround after a meltdown in 2011, leaving behind strong optimism about a bullish 2013 in hopes of RBI rate cut, hefty capital inflows, a recovery in global economy and excellent earnings growth in the third quarter of 2012-13.

The smart recovery helped investor wealth to soar by over Rs 14.5 lakh crore to Rs 67,78,609 crore on December 21, 2012 against Rs 53,12,875 crore at the end of last year.

The Q3 earnings, which are most likely to beat the market pundits, indications of more reforms by the UPA government and hopes of increase in retail participation in quality IPO/FPO and OFS in the near future expected to augment the bullish fervor in 2013, an analyst said.

The BSE sensitive index Sensex posted impressive gains of 3,787 points, or 24.5 per cent, at 19,242 on December 21, 2012, against preceding year-end's close of 15,454.92 points.

The Sensex had lost 5,054 points, or over 24 per cent, during 2011.

The National Stock Exchange's Nifty also spurted by 1,223 points or 26.5 per cent to 5,847.70 on December 21, 2012 from previous yearend's close of 4,624.30.

Investors ignored dwindling industrial output, declining exports, ballooning fiscal deficit, overall gloomy economic atmosphere in domestic and international markets amid fear of European debt crisis to spiral over world wide.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) made the second largest investment in the Indian capital market in the year under review.

As the Sebi data, FIIs pumped in Rs 1,21,652 crore or $23.15 billion this year till December 21. Previously, they had made biggest investments of Rs 1,33,266 crore or $29.36 billion in equities during 2010.

Kishor P Ostwal, CMD of CNI Research LtdBSE -2.32 % said a few big investors made a large profit in the market as select stocks scored new highs in view of paucity of floating stocks.

However, retail investors were not benefitted either in the secondary market IPO market and were seen selling their holdings, as a result the public ownership in the India Inc came down to 6-7 per cent as against a high of 15 per cent 2007, he said.

Though the Sensex could not surpass its all-time peak registered in 2008, the sectoral indices like BSE-FMCG, BSE-HC, BSE-CD and BSE-Auto logged their historical highs during the year on hectic buying by foreign funds.

FCU employees adopt a family

Employees of P&G Mehoopany Employees Federal Credit Union participated in the "Adopt a Family" program through the Interfaith Friends organization. This year, the credit union "adopted" a family of six, including four children, mother and father. The family put together a wish list. Company ranked: Benco Dental is ranked ninth among the top 29 large employers in the state, according to the 13th annual Best Places to Work in PA awards program.

Bank donates to program: The Dime Bank donated $20,000 to Honesdale Communities that Care through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit program.

Company presents gift: Frontier Communications recently presented Wyoming Seminary with a gift of $11,250 in support of the school's financial aid program. The gift was made possible through Frontier's participation in the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program.

Banks support TV: First National Community Bank will donate an Education Improvement Tax Credit to the Northeastern Pennsylvania Educational Television Association. The $2,900 donation will help WVIA-TV continue to provide educational programing for children in Northeast Pennsylvania. Pennstar Bank has also donated $5,000 through the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program to support WVIA's educational services.

Bank donates: First National Community Bank presented the Lackawanna College Environmental Institute with a donation of funds made available by the Education Improvement Tax Credit program. The bank also donated an Education Improvement Tax Credit to benefit the Greater Pittston YMCA's pre-kindergarten program.

Council meeting held: The Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce's Women in Business Council met at Genetti's in downtown Wilkes-Barre. The speaker for the November program was Fred Aebli, instructor at Penn State Worthington Scranton campus. The topic was "Can You Make Time - how to get more accomplished in the time you have." Members of the massage therapy class of McCann School of Business also attended the event.

PPL invests: PPL recently presented a $2,000 check to Workforce Wayne as an investment in its current-year community campaign.

Company supports: Waste Management made a $1,000 contribution to Junior Achievement of Northeastern Pennsylvania Inc. through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program to support Junior Achievement's financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship programs.

Program receives gift: Pennsylvania American Water recently made a gift to Wilkes University through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program. This gift will support innovative programming at Wilkes including Science in Motion, Women Empowered by Science and Adventures in Science.

Awards designated: Pocono Health Foundation and the Rotary Club of the Smithfields held their annual holiday tree-lighting ceremony, which awarded nonprofit agencies grants that will improve the lives of children in the community. This year, the tree-lighting funded eight organizations with a total of more than $7,000. The recipients are: Big Brothers & Big Sisters of the Bridge, Monroe County; Center of Vision Loss; Melon's Gift Inc.; Pocono Alliance; Pocono Area Transitional Housing; Pocono Family YMCA; Pocono Services for Families and Children; and Youth Infusion Inc.

Apps ranked: Citizens Bank's mobile banking apps for iPhone and Android have been named the "Best Integrated Apps" in the industry by Javelin Strategy & Research following its review of customer ratings in the Apple App Store and in Google Play.

Health club opens: VIVE Health and Fitness has joined the list of new businesses in the Wyoming Valley. Located at 500 Third Ave., Kingston, it opened at the end of October as a full-service fitness club occupying 25,000 square feet of space.

Bank presents donation: Pennstar Bank presented Lackawanna College with an $8,000 Educational Improvement Tax Credit donation to assist the college's environmental and cultural education programs for youth and youth educators.

Assessments offered: Northeastern Pennsylvania Industrial Resource Center is currently offering no-cost office process assessments to manufacturers throughout Northeast and northern Pennsylvania as a way to help them identify ways to improve customer service, enhance office processes and maximize profitability. The assessments will be performed by Maureen Mulcahy, NEPIRC's project manager.

Certificate awarded: Geisinger LifeFlight has been awarded an air carrier certificate by the Federal Aviation Administration after an extensive two-year application and development process. The air carrier certificate will allow the health system to directly operate the aircrafts it leases and owns. In addition, GHS will directly employ its own pilots, mechanics and aviation support personnel.

Award recipient selected: Smart Blonde Creative has been selected as the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce December 2012 recipient of the Small Business Spotlight award. Smart Blonde Creative is a design firm that specializes in creating brochures, Web designs or whole branding campaigns for small businesses of any size budget.

Whoa! A Year-End Rally for These 3 Stocks

After a round of several consecutive 100-point gains last week the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI ) has put together an equally strong run in the other direction, most recently on Friday, where it fell 120 points, leaving the index just about where it started.

Although almost every single component of the Dow fell, American Express (NYSE: AXP ) and McDonald's (NYSE: MCD ) managed to eke out slim gains, rising less than a 0.5% each as both reach out to penny-pinching consumers who will have to make their coins scream even more after we go over the fiscal cliff.

Still, the three stocks I'll talk about today managed to far outpace the Dow or its components, some even surging higher by double-digit percentages. Resist the urge to high-five everyone in the cubicles next to you, however. Smart investors won't celebrate until they know why their stock surged, because without a fundamental basis for the bounce, these stocks could just as quickly make the return trip down.

On a roll
Despite some lingering concerns over Halozyme Therapeutics' Enhanze, biotechs and pharmaceuticals still think enough of the enzyme it discovered to believe it can transform the way drugs are delivered. Halozyme soared after Pfizer (NYSE: PFE ) became the latest drug giant to jointly develop a series of injectibles using the platform.

Enhanze modifies medicine through the use of human enzymes so they don't have to be given intravenously but rather may be delivered through an injection. There's been a lot of interest in what Halozyme offers, but the biotech has had to deal with several setbacks as the FDA worries about the safety profile of the enzymes. The regulatory agency has rejected drugs developed by ViroPharma (NASDAQ: VPHM ) and Baxter International (NYSE: BAX ) , though the former has been given the green light again to resume clinical studies while Halozyme has to offer up more tests for the latter.

The deal with Pfizer is significant, because it shows interest isn't waning after the decisions, and with money paid to the biotech upfront, it gives it the financial wherewithal to keep moving forward. Halozyme is also developing an injectable version of cancer therapy Herceptin in partnership with Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche, which has a nearly $6 billion market.

Getting a charge out of batteries
Housing stocks continue to perform as if we're back in the go-go days of McMansions on every corner, though as the Fool's Matt Koppenheffer points out, they may indeed be on their way back. Pulte Homes (NYSE: PHM ) says buyers want and need new, bigger houses.

As a result homebuilder stocks have made incredible gains in 2012, as Pulte shares have nearly tripled in value, KB Homes (NYSE: KBH ) is up 130%, and even Beazer Homers (NYSE: BZH ) is up more than 30%. But the real winner has been Hovnanian Enterprises, which enjoyed a quadrupling of its stock this year.

The industry's resurgence probably has more to do with the Federal Reserve's moves to keep interest rates at artificially low levels, which continues to delay the cleansing that's needed in the industry to wipe out the shadow inventory that hovers in the background. It sends the wrong signals to the market, so that builders start building more again and shows they learned nothing from their collapse because of it. Hovnanian's rise on Friday may have more to do with options expiration than the industry's fundamentals, but I continue to expect the builder to fall like a house of cards once again.

A chip in the armor
Where PC sales have long gone over the cliff and analysts don't expect them to hit bottom anytime soon, chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices may have finally reached such depths that it can actually be considered a bargain now. At its lowest point it lost more than three quarters of its value, but it has since climbed 43% from its nadir (though its still almost 70% off its highs). In comparison, Intel (NASDAQ: INTC ) is down just 27% from its peak.

While new ultrabooks (or, AMD's answer to them, the Asus VivoBook) and Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT ) new Windows 8 operating system were supposed to provide a spark for the industry, that hasn't materialized -- yet. That could still come around, though, in 2013 and with AMD at severely depressed prices even after its rally, it could be a stock to watch.

When it comes to dominating markets, it doesn't get much better than Intel's position in the PC microprocessor arena. However, that market is maturing, and Intel finds itself in a precarious situation longer term if it doesn't find new avenues for growth. Design and Build

LaCie first introduced the Porsche design in 2003 and continues on its tradition with the release of its P'9223 Slim drive. It utilizes a machine finished aluminum design that provides a sleek and elegant enclosure. The drive takes slim to the next level with the drive coming in at less than a 1/2 inch. In comparison, the P'9223 is thinner than Apple's ultra-thin MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. LaCie also specifically designed the P'9223 to be a nice portable storage option for a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air.

 

The P'9223 utilizes a USB 3.0 interface and is powered through the USB port, so there is no need for an AC adapter. The drive features a thin status light which provides details on the activity of the drive; steady - on, flickering - in use, and off - drive is off. Utilizing Crystal Disk Info 5.2.0, we see the LaCie P'9223 Slim SSD is using a client version of the popular Crucial M4 128GB SSD with a model number of MTFDDAC128MAM. The drive features a SATA 6Gb/s interface with stated sequential read and write performance of 500MB/s and 175MB/s respectively.

User Interface

The P'9223 Slim requires the user to format the drive before use, for which LaCie has nicely included the LaCie Setup Assistant. Once in the drive is connected to a PC, the Setup Assistant pops up as an auto run program, at which point the user selects language preference and agrees to LaCie's license agreement. Next, move to the Format tab, which you'll see LaCie Share (Compatible) and LaCie Volume. You have the option to slide the arrow to either side to adjust the capacity of the drive over the two partitions. If you plan on using this device only on Windows based devices, it is recommended to move the arrow to the left to create a large volume for Windows. If you will be switching between Windows and Mac operating systems, it would be recommended to move the arrow to the right, creating a large volume to exchange date between the different operating systems.

 

The LaCie Desktop Manager allows you to manage and configure all LaCie devices with one easy-to-use interface. Also, it provides Genie Timeline Free for Windows and Intego Backup Assistant for Mac, which are backup utilities that will automatically backup your files to the P-9223 Slim drive. Another option to back up data is the Wuala software. Wuala is LaCie's secure cloud storage where users can store, access and share your files with friends, family, and co-workers from anywhere.

 

Performance

Using our Consumer Testing Platform, we used IOMeter over USB 3.0 to run the P'9223 through its paces to see how the performance numbers stand up to the listed performance of up 400MB/s. The P'9223 saw sequential read and write performance of 276MB/s and 179MB/s. Its sequential read performance is below the estimate performance of a Crucial M4, though the sequential write is right on par with listed specifications. Looking at the random 4K read and write performance, we see the P'9223 offers 4,960 IOPS read and 11,938 IOPS write performance. Though these numbers may not live up to the performance numbers listed by LaCie for the drive, they are still impressive for an external device that uses USB
Conclusion

LaCie is known for their outstanding build quality and industrial design, you will find more of the same with the P'9223 Slim SSD drive. With its machine finished aluminum design, the P'9223 has an elegant appearance that is worthy of having the Porsche name associated with it and is a perfect match in build quality and size to for Apple's ultra-thin MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.

The P'9223 provides good performance numbers through USB 3.0 with its SSD. The down side of course is the lack of capacity, which LaCie addresses with a 500GB hard drive version to fill that gap.

Uninterruptable Power Supply Range Expanded by PULS

PULS, well known for its high-efficiency power supplies, has recently expanded its range of DIN Rail Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) systems.

Units are available to suit a wide range of applications including PLC and industrial PC control systems requiring buffering for just a few minutes as well as remote installations needing back-up for up to many hours all depending on the load and battery size used. The PULS UB10.242 for example delivers 240W 24V with storage of up to 130Ah and can support load peaks as well. Another brand new unit is the UB20.241 that can support loads of up to 480W.

The PULS DC-UPS range features a unique One Battery Concept which PULS claims ensures the longest possible service life for emergency stand-by batteries. The One Battery Concept also enables operators to spot defective batteries by managing the battery individually which other systems using two batteries connected in series can’t.

The system also incorporates a device to continually monitor battery condition and give early warning of failure. Battery life is further extended by limiting the extent to which the battery is discharged during buffering. The limitation can be selected using a rotary switch or activated using the ‘inhibit input’ feature. Again this is only possible by utilizing the one battery concept to have individual battery management.

Other diagnostic features include LED signalling for operation modes like charging, buffer mode or warning of possible faults.

For Sale in Japan: Electronics Assets

TOKYO—Panasonic Corp. 6752.TO -1.38% said Friday it agreed to sell the digital-camera business it inherited in its 2009 acquisition of Sanyo Electric Co. to a Japanese private-equity firm. The deal is symbolic of how Japan's struggling consumer-electronics companies are setting aside years of resistance to get serious about shedding nonessential assets and streamlining their sprawl of operations.

But this newfound pragmatism, necessitated by a sobering reality of multibillion-dollar losses in recent years and strained finances, may be hindered by a mismatch of what they are willing to sell and what potential buyers want.

For these companies—Sony Corp., 6758.TO -1.63% Panasonic and Sharp Corp. 6753.TO -2.32% —it is a Catch-22 situation. The businesses that make the most sense to unload are uncompetitive, turning off potential buyers. But while selling businesses with more promising technology may draw in a bigger pool of potential buyers—both from the industry and private equity—that may leave the cupboard bare for a future turnaround.

Risky as that might be, some observers say some of the biggest names in Japan's corporate ranks may face no other choice.

"Company management should take a step back and calmly assess the possibility of various strategic alternatives of the business when it is still strong enough to compete globally and when it has a good momentum to generate profit, rather than waiting for five or 10 years until the business starts to underperform," said Masao Yoshikawa, head of the merger-and-acquisition group at Citigroup Inc. C -1.69% in Tokyo, which recently advised struggling Olympus Corp.'s 7733.TO -0.65% tie-up with Sony.

Potential deals involve businesses in highly competitive segments that would benefit from a shift to a low-cost manufacturing base, according to industry executives and investment bankers. The most-often cited examples are Sony's rechargeable-battery business and the television operations that Panasonic carried over from Sanyo. Facing a direr financial situation, Sharp is expected to sell a U.S.-based solar-project-development company that it bought two years ago.

Panasonic agreed Friday to sell the Sanyo camera business—which manufactures digital still and video cameras for other company brands—because a separate Panasonic unit already sells competing products under its own brand. The sale to Advantage Partners LLP is expected to close on March 31. The sale terms weren't disclosed.

"It's no longer considered taboo to sell," said Yuichiro Wakatsuki, head of mergers and acquisitions at Bank of America BAC -2.00% Merrill Lynch in Tokyo, adding that, in a recent change, Japanese companies are now more open to his pitches on what assets they can sell, not just what they can buy.

There are other low-margin businesses that the companies may want to unload, but which may generate little interest. Bankers and executives say logical options would be Sony's Vaio personal-computer business, Panasonic's mobile-handset unit and some of its electronics-components operations, and parts of Sharp's household-appliances division.

Another impediment may be the strong yen that has tormented the export-dependent trio in recent years by making it more expensive to sell goods manufactured in Japan. But it also makes it more expensive for non-Japanese companies to make acquisitions in Japan.

Some of Japan's sprawling electronics conglomerates with a more industrial focus—Hitachi Ltd., 6501.TO -1.43% Fujitsu Ltd., 6702.TO -0.58% NEC Corp. 6701.TO -0.60% and Toshiba Corp. 6502.TO -1.29% —to date have been more active than the consumer-oriented companies in shedding assets, having started a series of realignments about a decade ago. But rather than outright sales, they have done that through the creation of a complicated web of joint ventures, often backed by some government funding. The effect was to reduce their exposure to struggling industries, such as cellphones or specialty semiconductors, but didn't actually provide the parent companies a clean exit from those sectors.

Sony, Panasonic and Sharp may have to look abroad or to private-equity firms to unload businesses, because many Japanese companies simply don't have the money to step in and bail each other out. Taiwan contract manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. 2317.TW -0.34% already has snapped up assets from Japanese electronics companies, including a stake in Sharp's domestic liquid-crystal-display plant and Sony's overseas TV-assembly factories. Private-equity firms have eyed assets from Japanese electronics companies for years.

Sony is looking at options with its rechargeable-battery business, according to people familiar with the company's thinking. The division makes batteries for laptop computers, smartphones and other mobile devices, but it is a competitive market with Asian rivals driving down prices. While the company hasn't reached a final decision, some Sony executives believe that selling the business to a low-cost Asian manufacturer makes the most sense.

For now, Sony isn't considering more drastic measures such as selling its financial or entertainment businesses, according to these people. Both businesses are profitable and would garner more interest than Sony's Vaio computer business—a division with thin margins in the best of times and that is unprofitable during tough times. Sony doesn't break out earnings for the PC business. Since April, the company has been saying that it will accelerate realigning its business portfolio and shifting its resources to growth areas, but hasn't yet publicly identified any sale targets as part of that effort.

Panasonic President Kazuhiro Tsuga outlined a new round of restructuring measures at the end of October, when the company reported a ¥685 billion ($8.12 billion) quarterly loss. Starting in April, the company will streamline its sprawling 88 business units to 56 units, with only subsidiaries capable of a 5% operating margin making the cut. While some may be closed or consolidated, Mr. Tsuga said the company is also considering selling some of the 32 units on the chopping block.

The troubles Panasonic faces today reflect in part its failure to fully reap the benefits from its 2009 acquisition of Sanyo. Panasonic hadn't integrated Sanyo's digital-camera operations and the overseas Sanyo-brand TV business. A spokeswoman for Panasonic said the company is now studying various options regarding what to do with the TV business. Last year, the company sold Sanyo's household-appliance businesses to the Haier Group.

Cash-strapped Sharp is also considering selling a string of assets including plants in Mexico, China and Malaysia, and Recurrent Energy, a California-based solar-power developer it bought for $305 million in 2010, according to people with knowledge of the company's plans. Sharp has also said it may sell its holdings in other companies and its Tokyo office. Hon Hai is considering buying Sharp's TV factories in Japan or abroad. Around the same time it took a stake in Sharp's LCD plant in March, the Taiwan company agreed to take a stake in Sharp. But the agreement unraveled amid a sharp decline in Sharp shares after dismal earnings. Both companies said they are still talking.

上一代SNB仍然占六成 IVB明年才能主流

根据最新路线图，Intel将在2013年第一季度大面积升级入门级的奔腾、赛扬处理器，引入22nm Sandy Bridge架构的Pentium G2130/G2020/G2020T、Celeron G1610/G1620/G1610T，而从2012年底开始，32nm Sandy Bridge家族中相对应的Pentium G870/G645/G645T、Celeron G555/G550/G550T将进入停产退市的淘汰阶段，给新型号让路。

    同样在今年底，Core i7-2700K、Core i5-3450/2310、Core i3-2105、Pentium G440等型号也将不再接受新的订单。

    移动笔记本平台上，Core i7-3687、Core i5-3437U、Celeron 1037U/1007U/1020M/1000M等新型号也将在明年第一季度面世，都是基于22nm Ivy Bridge，全部双核心，其中数字编号末尾为7的均为17W超低压版，后两款M的是标准版，热设计功耗可能是35W。

    现有单核心的Celeron 807/B730会逐渐停止供应。

Ivy Bridge晶圆

    目前在Intel出货的桌面型处理器中，Sandy Bridge仍然占据60％，Ivy Bridge则是34％，此外还有Atom 4％、Sandy Bridge-E 2％。

    明年上半年随着新奔腾、赛扬的发布，Ivy Bridge的比例将迅速升至75-78％，Sandy Bridge、Atom加起来也会不到20％，明年第二季度发布的Haswell初期比例预计为4％。

    明年下半年，Sandy Bridge加上高端领域的Sandy Bridge-E、Ivy Bridge-E合计仅有4％，Atom也是4％，Haswell则提升到20％左右，剩下72％的都是占据绝对主流地位的Ivy Bridge。Haswell的主流化应该要到2014年第一季度才能完成。

    此外，Intel还会在明年第一季度发布20nm工艺MLC闪存的SSD 530系列固态硬盘，取代现有的SSD 520。新推出的SSD 525采用的是mSATA规格，定位不同。

National Green Tribunal serves notice on Baitarani River water use by Essar Steel

PTI reported that the National Green Tribunal has sought replies of the Union and the Odisha governments and Essar Steel to a plea accusing the firm of drawing water from Baitarani River without forest clearance to facilitate iron ore transport.

An NGT bench of its acting Chairman Justice A S Naidu and expert member P C Mishra directed against use of the river water contrary to the agreement between the state government and the Essar Steel Orissa which was also ordered not to execute the project without Forest Clearance.

As per report, Business Line “Issue notice to the respondents both ways ie by registered post/acknowledgement due and by dasti. The water from river Baitarani shall not be used contrary to the agreement for the purpose for which the clearance has been granted. Respondent No 5 (Essar Steel) shall not go ahead with the construction of the project without obtaining Forest Clearance. List the matter on February 6, 2013, for appearance and filing replies,” the bench said.

The tribunal’s order came on a plea by Odisha natives Sarbeswar Mishra and Murli Manohar Sharma, through their counsel B P Tripathy, challenging as illegal, arbitrary and unreasonable the decision of the centre and the Odisha government allowing Essar Steel to draw water from the river for transportation of iron ore through slurry pipelines and for other industrial purposes.
