Sony Bravia KLV-40EX430 (40-inch LED)

The Sony Bravia KLV-40EX430 TV replaces last year's entry-level EX410. Touch Panel PC Compared with its predecessor, this new model comes with an LED-backlit panel instead of an edgelit version and supports the Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) function. Other minor differences include some cosmetic tweaks, as well as a more pocket-friendly price tag. Here are the other highlights of this 40-incher.

Upside:

To embrace the latest slim aesthetics, the KLV-40EX430 sports a thinner bezel and a U-shaped pedestal stand. Unobtrusive touch controls on the front also added an extra touch of class, while providing easy accessibility for the users. This makes it straightforward to operate the TV even when it is wall mounted or surrounded by furniture and fixtures.

Another key differentiator is full A/V connectivity. Unlike the LG 42LS3400 and Samsung UA4H5006, this Sony is equipped with dedicated PC, component- and composite-video inputs which will appeal to users with many legacy A/V devices. These ports also free up the two onboard HDMI terminals for connecting native 1080p components such as a Blu-ray player.

Playing 1080p videos from smartphones and tablets on this full-HD LED TV is also simplified with its MHL capability. Besides transmitting both video and audio signals using an HDMI connection, MHL recharges the mobile device simultaneously, too. The KLV-40EX430 can be further distinguished by an onboard FM radio and a picture frame mode.

Downside:

We would have preferred a digital tuner provided by the LG 42LS3400 as this Sony is priced higher than its Korean counterpart. The KLV-40EX430 also has a 61mm side profile, which is visibly thicker than its predecessor, though not significantly so compared with equivalent 2012 offerings from other brands. Furthermore, do take note that the new swanky pedestal stand lacks an integrated swiveling function.

Outlook:

The S$749 Sony Bravia KLV-40EX430 is one of the more affordable full-HD LED TVs. Its standout features range from a strong A/V connectivity suite to MHL-compatibility, but it lacks an onboard digital tuner. If you have a very tight budget, the S$649 LG 42LS3400 is even cheaper and offers a slightly larger screen to boot.
